Selkies, a space odyssey and 23 Manor Place

Whisky has had us all talking for centuries. From its early 15th century origins to record breaking 21st century sales – it’s no surprise that the ‘water of life’ continues to feature in beloved stories, both old and new. Our releases carry stories too, with artwork that’s been designed with the liquid in mind, each bottling will feature one-of-a-kind artwork that’s linked to the whisky.

Here’s a rundown of some of the stories behind our whiskies.

Collective Series 310031– The warmth of a bothy

Myth and folklore played a huge role in the illustration by Evie Grace Illustration. Featuring a mix of an inviting both to warm yourself on cold walks and mythical creatures from the sea – this piece is a little slice of Scotland. With many myths featuring shapeshifting selkies encountering strangers and locals alike, it seems only fitting that our delightfully different Dailuaine features a few of them.

This whisky, whilst holding all of the classic, warming Speyside characteristics has notes of crisp apple and a generous helping of vanilla custard. A warm and welcoming dram that transforms from its notes on the nose, into something new on the palate – much like the selkies themselves.

Collective Series 4033 & 4067– Out of this world sister casks

Phoebe Phillips felt that unusual whisky deserved out-of-this-world designs. Although distinctly different in spirit style, we felt these two casks arriving with us from Agitator Distillery should be designed together. Both boast bold flavours but compliment each other beautifully.

By depicting small parts of whisky machinery in an other-wordly setting, we get a sense of how unique this whisky is. Agitator distillery’s Vacuum distillation is not only a more sustainable option but one that’s fairly new to the whisky scene. The combination of bright colour, bold designs and the sci-fi twist paired perfectly with two truly fantastic drams.

Collective Series 7/2013 -Welcome to Caskshare

For us, home is 23 Manor Place. All the tasting, designs and decisions are made by our small, but mighty team of six in the heart of Edinburgh’s west end. When we decided we’d have a welcome bottle as part of joining The Collective, we couldn’t think of anyone better than former architect and designer Martha Duncan to recreate our iconic building for the label.

Inspired by the golden tones of the whisky and the bright future we see ahead of us, Duncan has incorporated warm tones, offset by the clean pattern of the stonework to bring our front door to life on the page.
